All of these - with the exceptions of the dogs - were taken at La Paz Waterfalls and Gardens outside of San José. The animals there are rescued from injury or illegal ownership. There are dogs everywhere, and by the beach it's not uncommon to have surfers and famliies walk down the beach with their dogs following, off-leash. When the surfers go in the water their dogs will dig a hole in the sand, curl up, and wait. If you sit on the beach long enough, dogs will just stroll up to you and hang out for a bit before sauntering off. Most all of them have homes, but they live a much freer life than they do most anywhere else.
